East Coast - Batticaloa to Trincomalee
Calm
waters lap the large bays of Kalkudah and Passakudah
just north of Batticaloa, protected by off shore reefs.
Sadly civil war has torn apart the quiet life of this
side of the island, isolating hundreds of miles of coast.
This in turn has done wonders for the wildlife of the
area, with bird life especially returning in large numbers.
A
few more large lagoons break up the coastline up to
Koddiyar Bay. The large, natural harbour of Trincomalee
at the north end of the bay has been the focus of many
battles and the area is rich in history and intrigue.
The town and its forts make an interesting afternoon's
walk. Swami Rock is a small promontory just north of
the town, with an ancient Hindu shrine where ritual
offerings are made on Fridays.
