South Coast - Galle to Hambantota

Quiet, unspoilt beaches stretch one after the other, offering refuge after the bustle of the west coast resorts. Matara, another town steeped in history, has two old Dutch forts, within which you will find peaceful streets and colonial souvenirs. The smaller Star Fort accommodates the Museum of Ancient Paintings.
Many bays have outlying coral reefs, which furnish them with calmer waters like the small but busy resort of Unawatuna Bay. However there are much quieter reef bound bays as you travel eastwards at Weligama, Mirissa and Polhena. These spots are ideal for diving, with spectacular coral formations and shipwrecks to be explored. Other water sports like surfing are also possible along the coast.

A few tiny islands close to shore increase the beauty of this coastline. The stilt fishermen of Weligama continue their bizarre method of catching fish perched atop long poles fixed just offshore. Lace is another local specialty and you may see older women wearing blouses with their beautiful handiwork.
