South-West Coast - Moratuwa to Galle
Between
Beruwela and Bentota there is a garden for lingering
in secret alcoves amid such natural glory and tranquility,
that you may think it Eden on Earth. The locals call
it 'Brief'. Crossing the Bentara or Bentota River, you
may wonder why you ever holidayed anywhere else. The
wide, quiet river provides the ideal location for river
activities.
Beyond
lies the best stretch of sandy beaches and accommodation
on this side on the coast. Many interesting old temples
dot the countryside, including the Galapata Vihara.
Here, every January a perahera or procession is held
on Duruthu full moon day to honour the Buddha's first
visit to the island. Five species of turtles threatened
with extinction are given new hope at several turtle
conservation projects.
Further
south at Ambalagoda, traditional masks are carved at
workshops and displayed and sold at others.Around the
corner is the popular resort of Hikkaduwa with wide
beaches and waves to delight surfers.
