West Coast - Puttalam to Moratuwa
Away
from the main road, closer to the lagoon, there is an
alternative and far more charming route by the side
of the old canals built by the Dutch which are still
in use. There are other remnants and reminders of Sri
Lanka's colonial past in Negombo in the Dutch Fort,
cemetery and many residences, the inland cinnamon plantations
and the huge churches of the converted fisherfolk.
There
are also colourful local fish markets where the freshest fish
and shellfish are bartered for in an unique way. There are many
comfortable hotels along the stretch up to Marawila, offering
all amenities, including activities like windsurfing and deep
sea fishing.
