Day 01 |
Arrival and transfer to Heritance Kandalama, Dambulla (Approx 4.5 hours). Call it pure bliss….call it eco pleasure….Heritance Kandalama sits still, its back to the Kandalama rock and its front gazing over the placid waters of the Kandalama tank. Poised regally, it surveys the rich wildlife that visits its precincts. This stunning property is the legacy of Geoffrey Bawa, widely acknowledged as the “father of Asian architecture” & also as Sri Lanka’s most prolific and influential architect. Located amidst verdant jungle, calm waters, and rocky mountains, it offers a holiday where one can wake up to bird calls, stunning vistas, profuse foliage and absolute luxury. Day 02 |
Today you will be taken to visit the Sacred Temple built in a rock better known as the Dambulla Cave Temple, which is an isolated rock mass 500ft high, and a mile around the base. Here you find the famous Rock Temple which dates back to the first century BC. The caves of Dambulla sheltered King Walagamba during his 14 years of exile from Anuradhapura. When he regained the throne, he built one of the most magnificent Rock Temples to be found on the Island. Day 03 |
Morning, set off to climb Sigiriya, ‘the rock fortress in the sky’, with its rocky abode & water gardens. Built by King Kashyapa in the 5th century BC, Sigiriya a ‘World Heritage Site’ is an architectural marvel where one could observe the fortifications, pleasure gardens where he has used rock boulders & caves to form eco-friendly gardens, frescos of the beautiful damsels, graffiti on the mirror wall, lion staircase and the ruins of the palace which lies on the 600-foot rock summit. Proceed to Polonnaruwa (1.5 hrs). On your way, drive through the Minneriya National Park where you’ll have a fair chance of seeing wild Elephants whole herds of them, adults & babies bathing and playing in the water or feeding. After having lunch at the Polonnaruwa Rest House (direct payment), visit the ancient ruins of Polonnaruwa, the city that bares ample evidence to a once affluent nation and proud ancient Sri Lankan history. One can only imagine how magnificent these constructions would have been, its splendor so prominent even today as you gaze in wonder at its ruins. Polonnaruwa– another “World Heritage Site” was the Capital of Sri Lanka from 11th - 13th Centuries, contains some splendid and spectacular statues: Vata-da-ge - a unique design of the Sinhalese Architecture, moonstones, Thuparamaya and Alahana Pirivena monuments including Baddaseema Prasadaya, Lankatilake - a massive structure with vaulted roofs of brick, Galvihara Temple which has the best sculptured Buddha Statues in Sri Lanka. |
Day04 |
After breakfast you will be driven to Matale. (Approx 1 hr) Visit Matale Heritage Centre of Mrs. Ena de Silva (a close friend & collaborator of Mr. Bawa who has contributed a great deal of designs for his projects) and visit the “Aluvihara Kitchen” for lunch where rice will be served with 32 different curries - an adventure in Sri Lankan cuisine. ( on availability for that day/ direct payment) Don’t forget to check the special artistic designs used in batiks at the Center…. Proceed to Kandy where you will visit the temple of the sacred Tooth Relic, Audience Hall, remains of the old Royal Palace etc. A visit to Peradeniya Royal Botanical Gardens will provide you with an opportunity to observe some of the 5,000 species of trees and plants in the gardens, the circle where Heads of other countries have planted memorial trees and the Orchid House etc. Accommodation: Earls Regency, Kandy (H/B basis) |
Day 05 |
Today, you will be driven to Bandarawela via Nuwara Eliya. (Approx 5.5 – 6 hrs). In Bandarawela you can visit the Bandarawela Chapel of the Good Shepherd's Convent (designed by Mr. Ulrik Plesner). Day 06 |
In the morning leave for Yala via Ella, Wellawaya. (Approx 4 hrs) On the way, visit Dowa Cave Temple to see the murals in the cave and the rock-cut Buddha Statue dating back to 8th Century.
At Nugeyaya turn right and proceed to Buduruvagala to catch a glimpse of the tallest rock-cut Buddha Statue (51 feet high) and 6 other Mahayana Statues dating back to 8th Century. Proceed to Yala and spend the evening at leisure or you could opt to enjoy a mind blowing jeep safari in the Yala National Park. Accommodation: Yala Village, Yala (H/B basis) |
Day 07 |
Beach Time!!!!
After breakfast head off to Galle (Approx 5.5 hrs). En route, you may visit Claughton House (Fitzherbert House) at Dickwella. (On availability), the Ruhunu University Campus and the Matara office building designed by the late Mr. Bawa. At Galle, visit the Dutch Fort- “A World Heritage Site”. See the Old Dutch Church c. 1752 constructed as a thanksgiving by the wife of Commander Casparous de Jong, for the gift of a child. You will spend the night at Jetwing Lighthouse. Taking inspiration from the majesty of the Old Dutch Fort city is the Jetwing Lighthouse Hotel, an architectural masterpiece, an inspired creation of the late Geoffrey Bawa, Sri Lanka's iconic architect. This stunningly beautiful hideaway lies tucked into a luxurious hillock garden setting overlooking the inspiring waves of the Indian Ocean. Day 08 |
Morning visit the House of Mr. A.S.H. De Silva, Woodward Mawatha, Galle (subject to approval and will be limited to ground floor only). For lunch, drop in at the Triton Hotel, Ahungalle. (Payment Direct) Afternoon, visit Duchini / Jayakoddy House, Bentota (subject to approval only), Bentota Beach Hotel and Bentota Tourist Village. A visit to the Club Villa is a must, another exquisite creation of the late Geoffrey Bawa. (Approx 1.5 hours). |

Spend the day at leisure and soak in the atmosphere.

After breakfast, visit Blue Water Hotel, Wadduwa and Integral Education Centre also called as “Subodhi” located in Piliyandala. (Approx 1.5 hrs) Afternoon visit Mr. Geoffrey Bawa's residence at No. 11, 33 rd Lane, Bagatalle Road, Colombo 03, the Mahaweli Headquarters Building at the Hyde Park Corner and observe the breathtaking Parliament complex , at Sri Jayawardhanapura, Kotte. After enjoying a scrumptious dinner at the Gallery Café (Mr. Bawa's former Office) (Direct payment), you could opt to listen to a discussion by Mr. Channa Daswatte.
